Long Covid and its impact
For many people who become infected with Coronavirus, recovering from the infection is just the first part of a much longer struggle, with additional and lasting complications.
Even for those diagnosed with ‘mild’ or ‘moderate’ level infections, the COVID-19 virus can cause inflammation in the lungs, cardiovascular and neurological systems, and it can take a long time for the body to recover – a condition that has come to be known as Long Covid.
Specific symptoms and severity vary from person to person, but the effects can be life-altering and debilitating. Symptoms commonly include diminished lung function, breathlessness, heart problems, muscle and joint disorders, persistent pain and chronic fatigue.
Coronavirus can also exacerbate underlying health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal and mental health conditions.
The good news is that findings increasingly suggest that when addressed correctly, the impact of these symptoms can usually be diminished and quality of life improved
And we can help.

Why TenClinical?
TenClinical is the clinical arm of Ten Health & Fitness. We are experts in fitness, rehabilitation and clinical exercise prescription
TenClinical provides expert, evidence-driven and clinically proven 1-1 exercise therapy to clients living with a range of life-altering diagnoses, from heart and lung conditions, to cancer and diabetes, amongst others.
While Coronavirus is a new and still little-understood disease, and there is as yet no medical definition for Long Covid or list of symptoms shared by all patients, the more common symptoms of Long Covid are familiar to us at Ten Clinical.
They are very similar to the symptoms we see in our clinical clients and that our Clinical team works with on a day-to-day basis.
For example:
- the approach we take to help clients with cardiac issues is ideal for helping those experiencing heart problems following a coronavirus infection.
- the programmes that we use for Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) also help reduce breathlessness and fatigue in Long Covid clients
- we are highly experienced at helping with the physical and emotional impact of chronic fatigue syndrome through our work with clients undergoing chemotherapy, where it’s a common challenge
What does a Ten Clinical Coronavirus recovery programme look like?
There is no ‘typical’ programme – they are all bespoke.
Each Long Covid programme is designed around an individual client’s symptoms, condition, health and exercise history. along with a number of other factors. It is carefully prescribed, science-led, and delivered by highly qualified and trained Clinical Exercise Physiologists.
Although the recommended plan will vary significantly depending on the severity of the virus suffered and the postviral symptoms to be addressed, common elements will include:
- Comprehensive COVID19 specific initial assessment of pulmonary, pulmonary, cardiovascular and muscular levels/strengths
- Continued management of heart rate response to exercise
- Blood pressure management
- Management and supervision of respiratory response to exercise
- Tailored and prescribed exercise plan including resistance and aerobic based exercises.
- Frequent reassessments monitoring progress
Our Clinical exercise specialists will manage each case, ensuring that load, frequency and aerobic intensities are suitable for your phase of recovery. We will follow the FITT principles (Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type) along with ACSM guidelines to carefully manage your individual COVID 19 exercise recovery plan.
