This week (7-13th September) is Blood Pressure UK Week, or Know Your Numbers week. According the NHS, around 1/3rd of British adults have high blood pressure; with many not realising they have it. It may not seem like a life-threatening issue, but it is and can increase your risk of heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure greatly.
At TenClinical, we are offering free blood pressure checks all this week. Simply call to check availability and book your appointment.
What is blood pressure? And what does it mean when it is high?
Blood pressure is the measure of force the blood is travelling around the body from the heart. It is given as two values e.g. 140 over 90, the first number is the systolic pressure (heart pushing blood out), and the second is diastolic pressure (when you heart rests between beats). The press is measured in mmHg, or millimetres of mercury.
- Ideal blood pressure is in the range between 90/60 and 120/80mmHg.
- High value is 140/90 or higher.
- Low value is 90/60 or lower.
Blood pressure is partly genetic, but mostly comes down to lifestyle factors like diet and alcohol intake, fitness levels, daily stress/job and being overweight.
If you do not exercise, spend lots of the day sedentary, drinking lots of alcohol and have a bad diet high in low-density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol) – these factors will all lead to the arteries clogging up, and the narrowing of the tubes which make it harder for the blood to travel through them. This means blood pressure will be increased to maintain the flow rate, which places strain on the arteries themselves, capillaries, and the heart.
